Between the mid-1950s and mid-1960s, the Cornigliano full-cycle plant was the most advanced steelmaking site in Italy. Gian Lupo Osti was in charge of external relations. He entrusted the artist Eugenio Carmi with the artistic direction of corporate communication. Carmi involves many other artists, including the Swiss photographer Kurt Blum.
This memorable artistic foray into prosaic steel production marks one of the most important and fruitful occasions of confrontation between the worlds of art and industry. These were the same years in which Luigi Nono’s attention turned to the condition of the steelworkers in the conception and writing of La fabbrica illuminata.
Those workers are precisely at the centre of the images taken by Kurt Blum, exhibited in the exhibition La fabbrica illustrata, organised by the Ansaldo Foundation.
